Ser vs. Estar: Choosing the Right "To Be"
Spanish has two verbs for "to be". Learn when to use ser and when to use estar, see how the meaning of a sentence can change, and practise until the choice feels natural.
Before you start
English uses one verb, "to be", for everything. Spanish splits it into two: ser and estar. Choosing the right one is one of the most important skills in early Spanish, because the wrong choice can change the meaning of a sentence.
Ser: to be (essential identity)
| yo | soy | I am |
| tú | eres | you are |
| él / ella | es | he / she is |
| nosotros | somos | we are |
| ellos | son | they are |
Estar: to be (location and state)
| yo | estoy | I am |
| tú | estás | you are |
| él / ella | está | he / she is |
| nosotros | estamos | we are |
| ellos | están | they are |
Use SER for what something is
Use ser for identity, origin, nationality, profession, relationship, time, material, and characteristics that are considered part of who someone or something is. A helpful memory aid is DOCTOR: Description, Origin, Characteristic, Time, Occupation, Relationship.
- Soy de Colombia. — I am from Colombia.
- Mi madre es médica. — My mother is a doctor.
- La reunión es a las cinco. — The meeting is at five.
- Mi casa es blanca. — My house is white.
Use ESTAR for where something is and how it is right now
Use estar for location, temporary states, feelings, and results of an action. The memory aid PLACE helps: Position, Location, Action (in progress), Condition, Emotion.
- Estoy en casa. — I am at home.
- El café está caliente. — The coffee is hot.
- Mis amigos están cansados. — My friends are tired.
- La puerta está abierta. — The door is open.
Same adjective, different meaning
Some adjectives change meaning with the verb. "Es aburrido" means "He is boring" (his personality). "Está aburrido" means "He is bored" (his current mood). Likewise, "Es listo" means he is clever, while "Está listo" means he is ready. Ask yourself: is this permanent, or is it a current state?
